Do cooling covers work? We measured nine of them

The only way to test a cover is to change nothing else. We ran nine covers on the same two mattresses, in the same room, with the same bedding.

Cooling technology is the most heavily marketed feature in this category and the hardest to evaluate, because you can never buy the same mattress with and without it. So we did the next best thing: took two mattresses with removable covers, swapped nine different covers onto them, and logged surface temperature for eight hours under a sleeping tester each time.

Same room at 68°F and 50% relative humidity, same bedding, same tester, probes at shoulder, hip and knee.

The results

What this means

Phase-change materials work. A PCM knit absorbs heat as it changes state, and for the first three to four hours it measurably delays warming. It is the one cooling claim in this category that survived our testing intact.

It does not work all night. Once the material has fully transitioned, it stops absorbing. In our logs the PCM advantage peaked around hour three at −2.3°F and had decayed to −0.9°F by hour eight. If you wake hot at 2 a.m., a PCM cover helps. If you wake hot at 5 a.m., it will not.

Infusions are marketing. Copper, graphite, charcoal and gel raise the thermal mass of a material, which delays warming slightly and then converges. Across our nine covers, none of the infusion-based products produced a difference we could distinguish from measurement noise by hour four.

Construction still beats covers

The largest cover effect we measured was 1.5°F. The difference between the coolest and warmest mattress in our test set is 4.5°F, and that gap is entirely down to what is under the cover — coils move air, foam does not.

Buy the construction first. Our best cooling mattresses ranking is ordered by measured surface temperature rise, and the top two are both coil-heavy builds.

What actually helps, cheaply

If you are within a degree or two of comfortable, the cheapest fixes work better than the mattress does:

  • Percale cotton sheets instead of jersey or microfibre. Worth about 0.5°F in our informal testing, and about $40.
  • A lighter duvet. The single largest variable in the whole system, and nobody accounts for it.
  • A non-waterproof cotton terry protector instead of a waterproof one, if you do not need the waterproofing.
  • A fan on low. Moving air across the surface removes more heat than any material can.
