Saatva Classic
Number 1: Saatva Classic, Luxury Firm
The most supportive mattress we’ve tested for back sleepers and anyone who wakes with a stiff lower back. Traditional coil feel, hotel-grade finish, and it sleeps cool.
We logged surface temperature at the shoulder, hip and knee across a full night of sleep on nine mattresses. Three kept the rise under 2.5°F over eight hours.
We buy or independently request every mattress we test. If you buy through a link here we may earn a commission, which never affects our ranking. How this works.
Every mattress warms up under a sleeping body. The question is how much, and how quickly it sheds that heat when you move. We measure it directly: three surface probes, a controlled 68°F room, and a reading every hour for eight hours under a real sleeper rather than a heated dummy.
The pattern in our data is not subtle. Coils leave room for air to move; foam does not. The three coolest mattresses we have measured are all coil-heavy builds, and the four warmest are all-foam. Cover technology narrows the gap but does not close it.

Talalay latex over pocketed coils. Bouncy rather than sinking, extremely durable, and the second-coolest mattress we have measured.
Held its shape under our 240 lb tester better than anything else we have measured, with only 1.1 inches of hip sink. The edges stay usable.
The same rows for each, including the figures we measured ourselves.

Open the full comparisonA phase-change cover is worth roughly 1.5°F in our measurements — real, but smaller than the 2 to 4°F difference between a foam core and a coil core. If sleeping hot is your main problem, buy the construction first and treat the cover as a bonus.
Gel beads raise the thermal mass of a foam layer, which delays warming rather than preventing it. In our overnight logs, gel foams tracked about 0.6°F cooler than the same foam without gel for the first three hours, then converged. By 4 a.m. the difference was inside our measurement error.
Talalay latex has an open cell structure and is pinned through with ventilation holes, so it moves air in a way memory foam cannot. The Saatva Latex Hybrid recorded +2.1°F against +3.4°F for the best all-foam mattress in the same round.
A polyester-filled duvet and a jersey fitted sheet will undo a cool mattress. If you are within a degree or two of comfortable, changing to a percale cotton sheet and a lighter duvet is cheaper and faster than changing the bed.
