What actually matters here

Most mattresses are designed and reviewed around a sleeper of about 160 lb. Above roughly 230 lb, everything changes: comfort layers bottom out, hips sink past the point where the spine stays in line, perimeters collapse when you sit down, and the whole mattress sags years earlier than the warranty suggests it should.

We measure this directly. Our heaviest tester weighs 240 lb, we photograph spinal alignment from the side, and we take a dial-gauge reading of hip sink daily for four weeks. Three mattresses passed.

How to choose, in four decisions

Look at the support core, not the total height

A 14-inch mattress with 5 inches of soft foam on top is worse for a heavier sleeper than an 11-inch one with a proper coil unit. What matters is the gauge of the steel and the density of the base foam, and the only place to find those is the specification sheet.

Foam density is the number that predicts sag

Below 1.8 lb per cubic foot, polyfoam compresses permanently under sustained heavy load. Memory foam under 4.0 lb/ft³ does the same. Brands rarely publish these figures voluntarily; ask customer service directly and treat a refusal to answer as an answer.

Check the warranty sag threshold

Most warranties only pay out once a permanent indentation exceeds 0.75 or 1.5 inches with nothing on the bed. That sounds generous until you measure it — visible, uncomfortable sag typically starts around 0.5 inches. A lifetime warranty with a 1.5-inch threshold is worth less than a ten-year one at 0.75.

The foundation matters as much as the mattress

A slatted base with gaps over 3 inches will let any mattress sag between the slats under heavy load, and it voids most warranties. A solid platform or a bunkie board under an existing frame is a $60 fix that protects a $2,000 purchase.

What is the best mattress firmness for a heavy person?
Firm, around 7 on a ten-point scale, for sleepers over about 250 lb, and medium-firm at 6.5 between 230 and 250. Anything softer lets the pelvis drop below the shoulder line, which is the mechanism behind most weight-related back pain on a bad mattress.
Do mattresses have a weight limit?
Most publish one, usually 300 to 500 lb per side. It is a structural rating rather than a comfort one — exceeding it risks damage, but staying under it does not guarantee the mattress will support you well. Why do mattresses sag faster for heavier sleepers?
Foam cell walls buckle permanently under sustained load, and the load scales directly with weight. A 240 lb sleeper puts roughly 50% more sustained pressure through the same square inches as a 160 lb one, which is why a mattress that lasts ten years for one lasts about six for the other.
