Independent mattress testing

Honest reviews for the last mattress you’ll buy this decade.

We sleep on every mattress we write about, for at least thirty nights, and publish what we find. No sponsored rankings. No paid placements.

Placemattress earns a commission when you buy through links on this site. We choose what to test and what to recommend on our own, and payment never affects a rating. Read our affiliate disclosure.

Our current top pick

Saatva Classic

9.4OVERALL · 32 NIGHTS TESTED

The most supportive mattress we’ve tested for back sleepers and anyone who wakes with a stiff lower back. Traditional coil feel, hotel-grade finish, and it sleeps cool.

Reviews by need

Start with the problem you’re trying to solve. Each guide ranks the mattresses we’ve tested against that one thing.

Our method

How we review a mattress

Every mattress is bought at retail or requested without conditions, tested in a real bedroom by a real sleeper, and scored on the same rubric.

Read the full testing protocol
  1. Thirty nights minimum

No mattress is scored on a showroom lie-down. We sleep on it for at least a month before writing.

  2. Measured, not guessed

Firmness on a compression gauge, heat with surface probes, motion transfer with a weighted drop test.

  3. Multiple body types

Each bed is slept on by testers of different weights and sleeping positions, because firmness is relative.

  4. Revisited yearly

We keep the mattresses. Every guide is re-checked annually for sag, wear, and changes to the model.

Three hybrids, side by side

The three mid-luxury hybrids we’re asked about most often, on the specifications that tend to decide it.

Who we are

Team Placemattress

A small group of writers and testers who got tired of mattress rankings that changed with the commission rate. We publish our rubric, our scores, and the reasons behind both.

Since 2021 we’ve tested 43 mattresses across 11 categories, and kept every one of them.
