The best mattresses for couples

Motion transfer measured with a weighted drop test and an accelerometer at the far edge of the bed, plus edge support for couples who each need their own half.

What actually matters here

Two people sharing a Queen have about 30 inches each, which is less than a crib. The two things that decide whether that works are motion transfer — whether one person moving wakes the other — and edge support, which determines how much of those 30 inches is actually usable.

They pull in opposite directions. Foam isolates motion beautifully and gives way at the perimeter; coils hold the edge and carry movement across the bed. Every recommendation below is a judgement about which of those problems is yours.

Best for motion isolation · 8.1

Number 1: Nectar Premier

The best motion isolation we have measured, at a price that undercuts every hybrid on this site. The compromises are heat and edge support.

Best overall for couples · 9.1

Number 2: Helix Midnight Luxe

Zoned coils that are firmer under the hips and softer under the shoulders. The best pressure-relief numbers we have measured on a mattress that still supports the pelvis.

How to choose, in four decisions

Decide which problem you actually have

If one of you gets up at 5 a.m. and the other does not, buy for motion isolation and accept softer edges. If you both sleep near the sides of the bed, buy for edge support and accept some movement. Almost nothing does both well, and a mattress sold as doing both usually does neither.

Split firmness is worth the money if you disagree

Several brands will build a King or Split King with a different firmness on each side. It costs a few hundred dollars more and it resolves an argument that no compromise firmness ever really settles. It only works in King sizes — a Split Queen is not a standard product.

Size up before you spend up

A King at $1,400 will do more for a couple’s sleep than a Queen at $2,400. If you are choosing between a bigger cheap mattress and a smaller expensive one, and you are currently on a Queen, take the space.

Check the edge with a real person on it

Sit on the perimeter for a full minute rather than pressing it with a hand. Our test is ten minutes seated with a dial gauge; the mattresses that fail are the ones where compression keeps increasing after the first thirty seconds.

DreamCloud8.6

DreamCloud Premier

Not as supportive as the two hybrids above it, but close enough that we would recommend it if the budget stops around $1,400. The year-long trial removes most of the risk.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best mattress for a couple with different preferences?
A Split King with a different firmness on each side, if the budget allows. Failing that, a medium-firm hybrid around 6 is the compromise that annoyed our testers least — it is close enough to right for most people that neither party feels they lost.
Does memory foam stop motion transfer completely?
Nearly. On our best all-foam result, a 10 lb weight dropped from 12 inches produced an accelerometer reading at the far edge that was inside the noise floor of the instrument. The same drop on a coil-on-coil innerspring was clearly measurable and woke a light sleeper.
Do coil mattresses squeak?
Modern pocketed coils, wrapped individually in fabric, do not. Squeaking almost always comes from the foundation or the bed frame rather than the mattress, and it is worth checking the frame bolts before blaming a new bed.
