How it feels
The Classic does not feel like a bed-in-a-box. There is no slow sink, no hug, none of the sensation of settling into foam. You lie down and the surface pushes back almost immediately, which the two testers who had been sleeping on memory foam described in their first-night notes as "sleeping on top of the bed rather than in it."
That comes from the construction: a layer of pocketed coils sitting on a second layer of tempered steel support coils, with a euro pillow top over the whole thing. The pillow top takes the edge off the springs without adding much sink, and after three nights nobody described the surface as hard.
The three firmness options are not marketing labels. We measured Plush Soft at 3, Luxury Firm at 6 and Firm at 8 on our compression gauge, sampled at nine points across the surface. That is a genuinely wide spread, and it is the reason this mattress appears in more of our category guides than any other.
Back and hip support
We measure spinal alignment by photographing each tester from the side while they lie on their back and again on their side, then marking the line from shoulder to hip to knee. On the Luxury Firm the line stayed within two degrees of neutral for all three testers on their backs, which is the best result we have recorded.
Our heaviest tester's hips sank 1.3 inches. On the four foam mattresses in the same round, the average was 2.6.
The mechanism is the lower coil layer. In a foam-over-coil hybrid, the comfort layers compress first and the coils only engage once you have already sunk two inches. Here the upper coil unit is doing structural work from the first inch, which is why the number holds up as tester weight increases.
Side sleeping is where the Luxury Firm shows its limits. Our 135 lb tester reported shoulder pressure by night four and preferred the Plush Soft when we swapped it in. If you sleep strictly on your side and weigh under about 130 pounds, order the softer option or look at a different mattress entirely — the the best mattresses for side sleepers guide covers the alternatives.
Temperature
Coils leave room for air to move, and it shows. With probes at the shoulder, hip, and knee, surface temperature climbed 1.8°F across eight hours under a sleeping tester. The all-foam mattresses in the same test rose between 4.1 and 6.3°F. Nobody in our group woke up hot on the Classic, including in July.
This is the single strongest argument for the Classic over the foam hybrids that cost the same. If you have tried gel-infused memory foam and given up on it, the difference here is not subtle.
Sharing the bed
This is the weakest part of the review. Dropping a 10 lb weight from 12 inches produced enough movement at the far side of the bed to register clearly on our accelerometer and, more to the point, to wake a light sleeper. If your partner gets up at 5 a.m. and you don't, this is a real consideration.
The trade-off is edge support, which is excellent — we sat on the perimeter for ten minutes with less than an inch of compression. On a Queen shared by two adults, that difference is worth about four usable inches of mattress width per person.
Durability
We bought our Classic in March 2023 and have re-measured it every twelve months since. Centre-of-bed sag at year three is 0.3 inches with nothing on the bed, which is the second-best figure in our records and comfortably inside the 1-inch threshold Saatva's lifetime warranty requires.
Two-sided construction is not on offer here, so there is no flipping, but Saatva recommends rotating head-to-foot every six months and our sag numbers suggest that is worth doing.
Delivery and the return
White-glove delivery is included and it is not a token service: two people carried the mattress up a flight of stairs, unwrapped it, set it on the base, and took the old mattress away. Budget an afternoon for the appointment window rather than the delivery itself.
The trial is 365 nights with a $99 processing fee if you return it. That fee is worth reading twice — it is not a large sum against a $1,995 purchase, but it does mean this is not a genuinely free trial in the way DreamCloud's is.
